Making Tax Digital: what small businesses need to know
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA) is HMRC’s programme to move UK tax record-keeping and submissions to digital software.
From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with total income above £50,000 must use MTD-compatible software to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC. The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027, and a further expansion is expected after that.
