AWM Limited, a Bury St Edmunds based manufacturer of weighing, dimensioning and process control solutions have seen a sharp increase in demand for their products due to the recent e-commerce boom. This growth within the business is providing new job opportunities within the area.
James Hobbs, Business Development Manager at AWM, says “In 2018, we responded to increased activity within the ecommerce fulfilment sector by introducing our new range of Resolution Dimensioners. Resolution uses a smart 3D imaging camera with Artificial Intelligence to provide weight and volumetric data for any item, including envelopes, courier bags, pallets and shipping crates.
AWM has seen triple-digit growth compared to pre-pandemic levels and this rapid expansion has led to the employment of new staff across their workforce. AWM are currently engaged with West Suffolk College to create apprenticeship opportunities for young people looking to pursue a career in sales or technical engineering.
Graham Spink, AWM Managing Director, says: “The current e-commerce boom has created an influx of orders that has allowed us to expand our workforce. Our staff are at the heart of what we do, and as a family company who have been established for over 40 years, we pride ourselves on the close relationship we have with our employees, many of whom have been with us for nearly 30 years. Being able to grow our team by offering jobs and apprenticeships to local people is incredibly important to us.”
Online shopping has become increasingly popular during the Covid-19 pandemic. According to eMarketer, Ecommerce accounted for over 30% of total retail sales in 2020. As a result of travel restrictions and retailers offering free next-day delivery, more and more people are shopping online. Fulfilment companies that hold, process and dispatch these online orders are constantly looking for ways to increase efficiency so that items are processed and dispatched as efficiently as possible.
Resolution Dimensioners weigh and measure cubic or irregular-shaped items in a fraction of a second, recording the items dimensions, volume, weight, barcode and images instantly. This data is then made readily available to the fulfilment companies software teams, enabling them to process items more efficiently and ultimately leading to greater profitability and happier customers.
