Suffolk first for USA-conceived yoga course

A groundbreaking approach of using yoga in tackling low body confidence, and overcoming eating disorder issues, is to run for the first time in Suffolk.

Conceived in the USA, the Eat, Breathe Thrive initiative provides a six-week programme combining neuroscience, mindful movement, meditation and psychology to help challenge previous patterns around eating distress and body dissatisfaction.

As from April, the course is to be delivered in Suffolk by qualified Eat Breathe Thrive yoga instructor Hannah McCarthy, and will be staged in conjunction with not-for-profit eating disorders organisation, Wednesday’s Child.

Hannah, who has previously overcome an eating disorder, is the first in the region to have this targeted yoga qualification and has many years of experience in teaching emotional resilience and positive body relationships.

“This is such a unique approach to body movement and emotional wellbeing, and I know from my own experiences that it is the kind of programme which is perfect for anyone who has previously had difficult relationships with eating, their size, or general dissatisfaction about their body,” she said.

“I’m so pleased to be working with Wednesday’s Child to deliver this in Suffolk for the first time, as the ethos of the organisation is all about encouraging healthy relationships with food and the body.”

The course runs from Sunday April 26th at Felixstowe Conservative Club and involves two-hourly sessions – commencing 10am – for six weeks. It is most suited to those who have recovered from an eating disorder, or are seeking to prevent or reduce harmful relationships with emotional eating and exercise.

Debbie Watson, founder of Wednesday’s Child, commented: “The Eat Breathe Thrive course is such a welcome concept, and is something we’re delighted to be running in partnership with Hannah.

“Those who have difficult relationships with food and eating, also have a hard time understanding what exercise or movement is right for them, but we know that the right routines of physical activity and body awareness can revolutionise how someone feels about themselves.

“The course is particularly sensitive in its structure, with only a maximum of 10 people participating in each session, so it’s not at all intimidating and is appropriate for anyone keen to relearn their relationship with eating, their body, or seeking to improve their general self esteem.”

The limited participant course costs £145 for all six sessions, although a minimal number of scholarship places are available. All additional profits will go toward supporting Wednesday’s Child in helping those contending with eating disorders.
