Independent travel agent Premier Travel has opened a new branch in Sudbury, staffed by the town’s former Thomas Cook employees.
The East Anglia based travel agency opened the new branch in the Borehamgate Precinct on Monday.
The five staff members previously worked in Sudbury at Thomas Cook. Premier Travel got in touch with them following the collapse of Thomas Cook to help them get back on their feet in new roles with the local agent.
The branch brings the agency’s total number to 23 and also sees a return to the hometown of Premier Travel chairman and co-owner Renford Sargent, who grew up in Sudbury.
Diane Buck, manager of the Sudbury branch, said: “We were all very shell shocked when we heard the Thomas Cook news. It was devastating.
“We applied at Premier Travel and within a few days, we all had new roles. We were elated and just can’t wait to get started in our new branch.
“Working for Premier Travel gives us scope to sell more products and destinations than ever before so we’d love for all of our loyal customers to come in and say hello to see what we can do.”
Diane and her team, Kirsty Habel, Nicola Rolph, Ellie Wilson and Claire Masterson, have a combined 90 years’ experience in the travel industry.
Paul Waters, Director of Premier Travel, said: “We are so excited to be able to open a branch in Sudbury. The support from the local community so far has been overwhelming.
“The travel industry is extremely close-knit so we were devastated to hear the Thomas Cook news. Premier Travel wanted to help in any way we could so we fast-tracked interviews for staff who lost their jobs and the Sudbury team are enthusiastic, experienced and a great addition to our travel experts.
“We look forward to being part of and supporting the local community as we open this store and look forward to seeing local shoppers in branch.”
