Red7Marine completes local project for Associated British Ports

Leading Marine Contractor, Red7Marine was contracted by ABP Ipswich to complete a quick turn-around project involving the relocation of a 53t NCK crane from its West Bank site to Cliff Quay across the River Orwell.

In addition to its Head Office in Essex, Red7Marine also operates from its own quay-side fabrication facility in the Port of Ipswich. The facility houses an overhead workshop crane, engineering processing machinery, welding equipment and plant. It is here Red7Marine also stores and performs maintenance activities on its fleet of jack-up barges.


ABP Ipswich contracted Red7Marine to relocate one of its cranes from West Bank Quay across the River Orwell to Cliff Quay, utilising the Haven Seajack 4 jack-up barge.

The Haven Seajack 4 has a 100t deck capacity making it ideal to act as a transport device for this specific project. The barge was towed from Red7Marine’s yard in the Port of Ipswich on high tide by Taska Marine’s TASKA 1204 Workboat.

The Haven Seajack 4 was towed into location with its legs up and the hull floating on the water, once on-site at West Bank Quay, Red7Marine’s Barge Masters began operations to jack the legs down onto the riverbed to provide a stable working platform and to position the barge to quay level.

Once at quay level, ABP’s crane could then be transferred and tracked onto the jack-up barge, secured and then ready for relocation across the river.

After a short tow across the river the barge reached its final destination at Cliff Quay where the crane was tracked off.  The relocation of the crane was completed within one day.

The project was first mentioned to our team during the first week of March and all operations were completed within one day, only a couple of weeks later.

Our Engineers completed all risk and method statements, site-specific assessments, floating stability checks and leg penetration assessments in-house ahead of the project commencing to ensure the barge could operate in the working environment.
