This container feeds Stowmarket families

Thanks to a chance encounter at a networking event run by Stowmarket & District Chamber of Commerce, the area’s Food Bank has just taken delivery of a much-needed 40-foot container from local company Secure Stores Nationwide.

Mike Smith, who runs the Stowmarket & Area Food Bank, was a guest at the meeting where Sarah Manning, MD of Secure Stores Nationwide, spoke about her container business. He contacted her right away to learn more.

Recently the Food Bank had to move their packing operation out of the Hillside Community Centre to a farm building just south of Stowmarket. With demand still high after the pandemic, they needed a lot more space to store their donated goods.

As Mike explains: “Sarah followed up very quickly, and was very easy to talk to. We’d originally asked for a 20-foot container, but they realised there was room for a 40-foot container on the site. So she sent one of her guys to see if they could get the truck in. They decided they could, we got a date for delivery – and that was that!”

Mike was in hospital when the container arrived, so Sarah sent him a video of the delivery to ensure he didn’t miss out.

“The customer service was excellent,” says Mike. “And we’re delighted. The container’s our main store now, and the place where we keep all our longer-dated stock. We couldn’t function without it!”

If you’d like to donate food yourself, there are drop-off points at Tesco, Asda, Lidl, Solar, Stowupland Garage, and the Co-op stores in Needham Market, Haughley, Elmswell, and Woolpit as well as many local churches and the Hillside Community Centre.
